Whether you’re looking for a quick meal for date night or special occasion or one of those easy delicious recipes that make a crazy weeknight feel more sophisticated, this perfect tender steak recipe is exactly what you need.
What is a filet mignon steak
Filet mignon is a steak cut from the tenderloin of the cow, which lies just below the backbone. The cow doesn’t need to use this muscle very much, so it’s very tender and not overworked.
Beef tenderloin is a long thin, almost cone-shaped muscle. Because it’s not completely uniform, the steaks can vary in size when they’re cut.
Sometimes you’ll see circular steaks that are 2 inches thick. Other times, you’ll get steaks that are more oblong and a little thinner like pictured below.
Don’t let the look discourage you. Any steak cut from the tenderloin is going to be delicious.
How can you cook mushroom sauce on the grill?
This recipe was honestly an experiment that worked out surprisingly well.
Most of the time I cook my mushroom cream sauce and peppercorn sauce in a pot on the stove or gill, but I wanted to see how if I could prepare it on the Ninja Grill right next to the steak.
With the Ninja Grill, it’s important to choose a baking dish that will fit inside the grill and still let you close the lid.
I added the dish to the grill along with some butter. The butter immediately melted, so I tossed in the veggies. They sautéed right up as the steak cooked.
I finished it off with cream and beef broth, and voilà, I discovered you CAN make cream sauce on the Ninja Grill.
Ingredients
- Filet Mignon Steaks: You can go with any grade of filet mignon steaks. If your budget allows, try wagyu filet. You’ll love them.
- Salt and Pepper: Use kosher salt and coarse ground black pepper for the best texture.
- Butter: Use real stick butter for the best flavor, not butter from a tub.
- Mushrooms: I like crimini mushrooms with this recipe, but honestly any type will taste great.
- Shallots: Shallots are small onions that have a little sweetness to them.
- Garlic: Fresh is always best. Mince it or chop it.
- Beef Broth: This will form the base of the sauce and provide salt and beefiness.
- Heavy Cream: The cream is an indulgent addition. It’s the key to helping the sauce thicken.
Substitutions: You can grill these filet mignon steaks without the mushroom cream sauce. Try them with my Ancho Garlic Compound Butter as an alternative.
How to make filet mignon on a Ninja Grill
- STEP ONE: Season all sides of the steaks with 1 teaspoon of kosher salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Let the steak rest at room temperature while you heat the grill.
- STEP TWO: Set the Ninja Grill to the grill setting. Set the temperature to medium and the time to 20 minutes.
- STEP THREE: Place steaks on the grill. Cook for 4 minutes. At the same time, place a baking dish on the grill with 2 tablespoons of butter.
- STEP FOUR: Flip the steaks and add the mushrooms, shallots, garlic, salt and pepper to the baking dish with butter. Stir to sauté.
NINJA PRO TIP: If you open the lid too frequently, it will increase the cooking time for your steaks slightly.
- STEP FIVE: While the steaks continue to cook, add the beef broth and heavy cream to the sautéed mushrooms and shallots. Stir occasionally.
- STEP SIX: Once the steaks cook for about 5-7 minutes and reach an internal temperature of 130F degrees, remove them from the grill. Once the creamy mushroom sauce thickens, remove it from the grill. Stir one tablespoon of butter into the sauce to help it thicken even more.
How to serve grilled filet mignon
Once the steaks are cooked through, remove them to a plate and let them rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing into them.
While they’re resting you can toss together a quick salad and pour some robust red wine.
Then, spoon the mushroom cream sauce right on top of the steaks.
When you slice into the steak, they’ll be perfectly pink and medium rare, which is the most flavorful way to enjoy a filet.
If however, you don’t like pink steaks, it’s okay to cook them a little longer. A perfect steak is a steak cooked to your preference.
Several people in my family prefer their steaks well done, so I just leave theirs on the grill for a few more minutes.
Storage
If you have leftover Ninja grilled filet mignon with mushroom cream sauce, you can store it whole or in slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
Spoon any extra sauce right on top and heat it all up together in the microwave when you’re ready to enjoy it again.
Just remember, the microwave will cook the meat further, so it will no longer be a medium rare steak. If you want your leftover steak to remain pink, you’re going to have to eat it cold.
Frequently Asked Questions
Filet is a lean, tender beef cut. All you have to do is season it with kosher salt and black pepper or my favorite steak seasoning. Set your grill temperature to medium heat and grill it to your preferred doneness. To measure the final temp, use an instant read meat thermometer. Insert into the side of the meat in the thickest part. The Ninja Foodi Pro and Ninja Woodfire Pro have a built-in meat probe thermometer grill feature to help you get the best results.
The time it takes to grill a steak will vary, depending on the thickness of the steak and your preferred doneness level. If you like your steak medium rare, cook a 2-inch filet mignon steak for about 4 minutes on the first side and around 5 minutes for the second side.
You can use this mushroom cream sauce on Ninja grilled chicken breasts, Ninja Grilled Ribeye Steak, Cowboy Ribeye Steak on Ninja Woodfire Grill and even pasta.
Make sure your Ninja Grill is preheated prior to adding the steaks. Once you do add the steaks to the grill, press down on them slightly so the surface area is in full contact with the grill grate.
