One thing I have learned with grilling is that temperature is key.
- It’s important to maintain a steady temp in your grill when you’re cooking slow and low.
- It’s important to cook meat to the right temp, so it’s tender and juicy.
The challenge with that though, is that I don’t always have time to nurse the smoker for 6-12 hours. If you turn your back, the smoker heat can rise quickly or your meat can go from undercooked to leather before you know it.
Fortunately, there is a simple solution – Bluetooth.
We almost always have our smart phones with us, right? Well they have Bluetooth built right in, which means you can now know the temperature of your grill and your meat at the touch of a button.
The Maverick iChef ET-735 Bluetooth Barbecue Thermometer allows you to set your grill and throw on your meat and get on with your day.
How does it work?
The digital thermometer comes with two temperature probes, but has built in connections for two extra probes.
You simply add two AAA batteries, insert the probes and turn it on. Then, decide what temps you want to monitor.
The Maverick iChef comes with two handy grill clips to hold probes above the grill grate for accuracy. This is ideal for slow and low smoking when it’s important to maintain a grill temp around 225-275.
Insert the other probes into the thickest part of your meat (without touching the bone).
Then, shut the grill and grab your phone. You’ll need to download their free Redi Chek app. It took me a minute to figure out how to use it, but once I learned which buttons to use, I loved how easy it was. I was definitely over-thinking it.
How to use the app
- Select your Redi-Chek device.
- Slide the circle at the top to choose which probe you want to set.
- Click on the picture of meat.
- Scroll through the meat choices and wellness settings.
- Click ok.
That’s it! When your meat reaches the set temp, your phone will play a tune, letting you know dinner is ready.
The custom feature
I really love the custom feature on this thermometer. Instead of selecting “beef medium-rare,” you can choose “customized” to set your own temperature. This is exactly what you need when you’re monitoring your grill temp.
If you’re smoking a brisket, place probe 1 in the grill clip. Choose any meat. Then, choose customized and set the temp to 225. If your grill ever gets above this heat, you’ll get a chime, so you know you’ll need to adjust your grill vents.
Stick probe 2 in the meat and set the customized temp to 165. When it chimes, wrap the brisket in foil and return it to the grill. Then, change the customized probe temp to 195 degrees. When it chimes again, your brisket is ready.
It really can’t get any simpler than that.
