This recipe for grilled Galbi - Korean short ribs - uses two secret ingredients to tenderize the meat and add authentic sweetness to the vinegar & soy sauce

Grilled Galbi - Korean Short Ribs

Yields4 Servings

 1/4 cup soy sauce
 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
 1 2.5-ounce tub (1/4 cup) Gerber 1st Foods Applesauce
 1 2.5-ounce tub (1/4 cup) Gerber 1st Foods Pears
 1/4 cup minced white onion
 1/4 cup water
 2 cloves garlic minced
 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
 1/2 teaspoon salt
 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
 1/2 teaspoon chili pepper flakes (optional if you like a little heat)
 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder
 1/4 teaspoon sesame oil
 2 pounds Korean or flanken short ribs
Finishing Touches
 white rice (optional)
 2 green onions (optional)
 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)

In a large zip-top bag, mix together the soy sauce, brown sugar, apples, pears, onion, water, garlic, rice wine vinegar, salt, pepper, chili pepper flakes, ginger powder and sesame oil. Add the short ribs and marinate overnight.

Preheat the grill to high. Grill the ribs for 5-7 minutes per side.

Serve with white rice and a sprinkle of sliced green onions and sesame seeds.

TIPS

Korean short ribs are beef ribs that are cut thin. Sometimes the package will read "flanken-cut ribs"

They're marbled with fat, so they're super tender and flavorful.

Sometimes galbi ribs are also called kalbi ribs. The g and k are often interchanged in the English translation.
