What are lemon pepper wings
Lemon pepper is a seasoning that combines dried lemon zest with black pepper and other herbs and spices. It’s a great seasoning to use for grilled chicken wings.
Ingredients do vary widely. Some brands use a lot of salt in their blends, so be sure to check the label.
Lemon pepper wings are chicken wings that are seasoned with the lemon pepper seasoning and finished with a lemon pepper sauce made up of the seasoning and melted butter.
They’re an easy appetizer to make for your next game day party, but because they use such simple ingredients, they’re also awesome for a quick weeknight dinner.
Ingredients
- Chicken Wings: You can use whole chicken wings or pre-cut party wings.
- Chicken Rub: Any chicken rub will work. I like to use my Homemade Dry Rub for Chicken Wings.
- Lemon Pepper Seasoning: Not all lemon peppers are the same. Some are very salty. Look at the ingredients. If you see salt as one of the first ingredients, you may want to reduce the amount you use. I use a salt-free lemon pepper when I make these wings.
- Melted Butter: If your lemon pepper has salt in it, be sure to use unsalted butter.

How to grill lemon pepper chicken wings
Heat your grill to 350F degrees with an indirect heat zone.
- STEP ONE: Combine the chicken rub with 2 teaspoons of lemon pepper in a small bowl. Pat the chicken wings dry with a paper towel. Sprinkle the rub on all sides of the wings.
- STEP TWO: Place the wings in a single layer on the preheated grill over indirect heat. Cook to an internal temperature of 195-205F degrees. This will take 30-60 minutes, depending on your type of grill.
- STEP THREE: Combine the melted butter and 1 tablespoon of lemon pepper in a large bowl. Once the wings are cooked, remove them from the grill and toss them in the sauce.
How to serve lemon pepper wings
Serve these wings right away while they are still hot and dripping with that delicious lemon pepper butter.
If you want, you can even make extra lemon butter for dipping.
Storage
Chicken wings are best enjoyed right away because over time the skin will lose crispiness. If you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Reheat them in the microwave or an air fryer. You can also freeze cooked chicken wings for up to 4 months, but they won’t be as tasty reheated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Heck yeah they are! They’re smoky, crispy and slathered in a citrusy, buttery dip.
They can be. They’re basically wings seasoned in a rub and dipped in a lemon butter sauce. If your rub is sugar free, you’re good to go. To be extra sure, you can make your own homemade lemon pepper seasoning.
Pat your chicken wings dry with a paper towel. Then, when you sprinkle on the seasoning, it should stick to the skins with no problem.
