What are spiral-cut carrots

In 2022, spiral cucumber salad went completely viral on TikTok and the trend continued through 2023 and even 2024.

The magic behind the salad was that the cucumbers were sliced in a way that they looked like a spiral, slinky or accordion.

Well, I’m taking that trend to the world of carrots and throwing them on the grill and adding a hot honey glaze.

This is a perfect spring or summer dish. It’s really fun on a crudités platter and a great with your pineapple-glazed Easter ham.

And it might be just cool enough that your kids will eat their veggies during regular weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Spiral cucumber salad is a raw Asian-inspired dish made with ginger, garlic, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sugar and Korean chile flakes.

You can use the same flavor profiles for spiral carrots if you’d like, but for this base recipe, I’m keeping the ingredients really simple.

  • Carrots: This recipe works best with large carrots, not baby carrots. Try to select carrots that have even thickness and length.
  • Olive Oil: Or any other cooking oil like avocado oil, corn oil or even sesame oil for a nutty flavor.
  • Kosher Salt
  • Hot Honey: This adds a hint of sweetness and spice along with a pretty glaze.
Substitutions: Instead of hot honey, you can use regular honey, maple syrup or melted butter.

See the full recipe card below for servings and a full list of ingredients.

  1. STEP THREE: Using a sharp knife, slice the carrot on a 45-degree angle. Make cuts every 1/8 of an inch or so. The chopsticks will stop the knife so you don’t cut all the way through.

  1. STEP FOUR: Flip the carrot over. Now, slice the carrot straight across. Again, make the cuts about every 1/8 of an inch.

Grilling spiral-cut carrots

  1. STEP ONE: Place the sliced carrots on a pan and drizzle with oil. Sprinkle all sides with kosher salt. You can add other seasonings at this point if you’d like.

  1. STEP TWO: Place the carrots on a grill over direct high heat. Grill for 10-12 minutes or until they are fork tender. Flip occasionally.
  1. STEP THREE: Add a drizzle of hot honey on top of each carrot and continue cooking for another 3 minutes.

How to serve spiral carrots

Remove the carrots from the grill and arrange on a platter. You can drizzle with more honey and add a fresh sprinkle of salt. If you like extra heat, add a sprinkle of gochugaru, Korean chili flakes.

For a pop of color, you can also garnish with fresh thyme or parsley.

Storage

Leftover spiral carrots can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. You can enjoy them hot or cold. They’re really fun on a veggie platter.

You can also freeze these carrots for up to three months. Let them thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

GCG Pro Pitmaster Tips

  • Add honey or a glaze at the end for added sweetness

Frequently Asked Questions

What seasonings or other flavors go with carrots?

Carrots are naturally sweet and earthy. Like most veggies, they’re great with just salt and black pepper. But you can really enhance their sweetness by adding honey.

For more variety, try using ginger powder and garlic powder or fresh herbs like rosemary and sage.

What cooking method is best for carrots?

Carrots are best when cooked at a high, dry heat. This allows their natural sugars to caramelize and the inside to get tender.

You can get this heat by cooking them on the grill over high heat or roasting them in the oven at 425F degrees on a sheet pan.

What are glazed carrots made of?

Well, the first ingredient is carrots. But the glaze can vary. It’s usually made with a sweetener like honey, maple syrup or brown sugar.
